About Journal

The Ethiopian Renaissance Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities (ERJSSH) is an interdisciplinary and erudite arm of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Gondar, North West Ethiopia. Established in 2014, the ERJSSH aims at providing a platform for scholars to share original, open-access, peer-reviewed research that explores human society and culture.  The Ethiopian Renaissance Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities (ERJSSH) is a biannual, double-blind peer-reviewed journal published by the University of Gondar with the objective of entertaining contributions from a wide range of disciplines within the Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities.  This journal features scholarly articles, reviews, and research synopses in both English and Amharic languages.

Articles published in the ERJSSH often inform public policy, educational reform, cultural preservation, and social development programs. By exploring themes like identity, tradition, globalization and social change, the ERJSSH helps deepen pervasive understanding of diverse cultures and human experiences. In effect, this journal is not just an academic repository—but—it is a scholarly wing that serves as an engine for social reflection, innovation, and transformation.

                                                Editorial Policy and Guideline

1.     Publication Decisions

The Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor, in consultation with Associate Editors are responsible for deciding the articles to be published in the journal. The editor will be guided by the editorial policies of the journal and constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The editor confers with the members of the Editorial Committee or reviewers in making this decision.

  1. Fair Play

Manuscripts are evaluated solely on scholarly merit without regard to authors’ institutional affiliation, ethnicity, gender, religious belief, citizenship, or political views.

  1. Confidentiality

All manuscripts received are treated as confidential and will not be shared except as required by editorial policies.

  1. Standards of Objectivity

The standard practice of the ERJSSH dictates that reviews be conducted objectively and personal criticism of the author is inappropriate and unacceptable.

5.     Acknowledgment of Sources

Reviewers (both internal and external) should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the editor's attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.

6.     Disclosure and Conflict of Interest

Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, universities, or institutions connected to the papers.

7.     Reviewer Misconduct

The editors of ERJSSH will take reviewer misconduct seriously and pursue any allegation of breach of confidentiality, non-declaration of conflicts of interest (financial or non-financial), inappropriate use of confidential material, or delay of peer review for competitive advantage. Allegations of serious reviewer misconduct, such as plagiarism, will be taken to the institutional level.

  1. Plagiarism

Authors should adhere to publication requirements and submitted work is original, is not plagiarized, and has not been published elsewhere. Fraudulent or knowingly using inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable. If an author has incorporated the work or words of others, proper citation or quotation is required, with accurate attribution to reflect individual contributions to the research and its reporting.

  1. Multiple, Redundant or Concurrent Publication

Authors should not submit manuscripts to ERJSSH that describe the same research already published or under consideration by another journal. Concurrent submission of the same manuscript to multiple journals constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.

  1. Fundamental errors in published works

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, the author must promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with our editors to retract or correct the paper.

  1. Copyright

Effective with initial submissions, authors must agree that if their manuscript is accepted, they will grant ERJSSH an exclusive, irrevocable license to publish their work while the copyright remains with the authors. Authors of manuscripts, submitted at any time, need not contact the ERJSSH to request permission to reuse their own material. Authors who granted the journal exclusive license to publish and authors who transferred copyright to ERJSSH are allowed to do the following:

  •  Use all or part of the work in compilations or other publications of the Authors' own works (includes theses/dissertations), to use figures, photos, and tables created by them and contained in the work, to present the work orally in its entirety, and to make copies of all or part of the work for the Authors' use for lectures, classroom instruction or similar uses. If the author is employed by an academic institution, that institution also may reproduce the article for teaching purposes.

  • Post the accepted manuscript version of the work, the "Paper in Press," on the author's personal web page, their personal or institutional repository, or their funding body's archive provided that a link to the article in the Ethiopian Renaissance Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities is included.

  • Post a manuscript version of the work on not-for-profit preprint servers provided that the Authors retain distribution rights to the work, that ERJSSH formatted final files are not posted, and that a link to the article in the Ethiopian Renaissance Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities is included.

  • Re-use of ERJSSH content must include the following:

This research was originally published in the Ethiopian Renaissance Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities, Author(s). Title. ERJSSH. Year; Vol:pp-pp. © Ethiopian Renaissance Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Gondar.

  1. Ethics policy

As a condition of publication, all authors must grant the Ethiopian Renaissance of Social Sciences and Humanities license to publish their work as described above (new policy, effective July 1, 2018). ERJSSH is committed to peer-review integrity and upholding the highest standards of evaluation.

Once a submission is deemed suitable by an editor, it undergoes a double-blind peer review conducted by independent, anonymous expert referees.

Submission of a manuscript with multiple authors signifies that all listed authors have consented to the submission and approved the final version. Any allegations of misconduct- such as submission without approval from all authors, plagiarism, or republication of previously used data without proper acknowledgment-will be thoroughly investigated.

All authors have unhindered access and right to the articles they publish in the ERJSSH. Authors also agree to cooperate with any inquiry or investigation initiated by the editorial committee or external reviewers into an allegation of research misconduct involving a manuscript. If any investigative or reviewing body makes any finding with respect to a manuscript, each author is required to provide immediately the details of the findings and support. When an allegation of a suspected violation is received for a published article, ERJSSH shall first contact the corresponding author and request an explanation or response. Authors are expected to maintain the original data from their manuscripts for a minimum of six years after the final publication date of their article, as they may be required to provide the original data. If authors are unable to provide all the original data upon request, the editor may ask the authors to withdraw or correct the article or the publisher may retract the article. The editor will decide upon a course of action based on the material provided by the authors. When the editor and the authors cannot agree on a resolution or appropriate correction of the literature, the ERJSSH editorial committee will decide the appropriate resolution.

Above all, any research which involves human subjects should collect ethical clearance from ethics Review Boards and informed consent and/or assent from participants.

  1. Repository

All authors have the right to deposit their works at the repository of their own choices.

  1. Acknowledgments

  1. Disclaimer

The views expressed in published articles are those of the authors. The editors and Editorial Committee are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or originality of the manuscripts.

All manuscripts undergo a double-blind peer review to assess authenticity, ethical soundness, and scholarly contribution. Reviewer recommendations serve as the primary basis for editorial decisions, which are final.
